As we wrap up 2025, we're reflecting on a year of significant growth and learning. Some highlights included scaling our forecasts to cover larger areas, partnering with major water organizations across the U.S. and Canada, and improving performance with expanded training data—especially in cold weather regions.
Thanks to everyone who made this year possible. Exciting things ahead in 2026!
Hydropower milestone: HydroForecast informs operations at over 19 GW of hydropower, which annually produces enough energy to power over 19 million homes!
Global presence: We’ve forecasted in 17 countries across 6 continents to date.
New large-scale projects with state and federal partners: We’ve seen a growing trend in AI forecast adoption from federal organizations as highlighted by our new partnerships with the Bureau of Reclamation and Ontario Power Generation.
Industry conferences and speaking engagements: HydroForecast team members traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe to attend and speak at a total of 16 conferences this year, sharing insights and case studies. We hope to catch you in person soon as we continue these important conversations. Keep up with the team in 2026 at upcoming events.
Growing coverage: HydroForecast is providing real-time flow forecasts for nearly 1.9 million km2 of drainage area (about the same size as Mexico!), covering diverse hydrologic systems from glaciated regions to flashy basins.
Forecasting in new industries: HydroForecast isn’t just for hydropower producers; our streamflow forecasts are finding use cases in new industries, including navigation & shipping agencies leveraging our water level forecasts to optimize routes and schedules, and mining companies tapping HydroForecast to optimize water use and minimize operational risks.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG): We’re proud to share that HydroForecast was selected by OPG to support water resource management activities for Ontario's largest clean energy producer ranging from daily operations to long-term planning.
The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation): Recognized as the largest water wholesaler in the U.S. and a leader in hydropower production, Reclamation is using HydroForecast as part of its commitment to integrating innovative technology into water and power operations throughout the Western U.S. Reclamation has been a part of HydroForecast history from the start and we’re excited to continue to work together to connect advanced forecasts with the critical decision-makers who steward our most vital resources.
Landsvirkjun: Landsvirkjun powers 70% of Iceland and HydroForecast helps them rise to the challenges of forecasting in glacial regions. Hörður Bragi Helgason, Hydropower Research and Development at Landsvirkjun, shared:
“The HydroForecast team provides excellent customer service, especially with our very challenging region for modeling in Iceland. They have a truly talented and responsive team, always quick to address issues and committed to improving the forecasts."
New Brunswick Power: Our team works hard to support New Brunswick Power's hydro operations with accurate, reliable data. Chris Carson, Director of Operations, shared how his team benefits from HydroForecast on a regular basis.
“Snowmelt season is critical for New Brunswick Power's hydroelectric operations. HydroForecast has been helpful monitoring freshet closely this season. The forecast performance is strong and we have been utilizing it daily for hydro optimization to stay prepared for changes in water supply and mitigate risks.”
Auckland Council: HydroForecast provides the crucial, actionable insight that transforms a reactive storm response into a proactive emergency and operational workflow for Auckland Council in New Zealand's largest city. Kolt Johnson, Manager for Hydrology and Environmental Data Management shared:
“HydroForecast is a valuable tool at Auckland Council, giving us crucial insights into upcoming storm and heavy rain events. The dashboard is an integral part of our emergency response workflows and supports our commitment to public safety. We also use it to plan our hydrology operational work, targeting data collection during high flow events at important sites."
Sonoma Water: We chatted with Nathan Baskett, a Hydrogeologist at Sonoma Water, in a webinar about his experience researching and managing atmospheric rivers. Considered a national leader in research on atmospheric rivers and Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO), Sonoma Water has been a HydroForecast customer since 2022.
This year brought valuable opportunities to dive deep into real-world applications and challenges across water management and AI forecasting. We've captured these experiences in case studies and technical resources that highlight what we've learned—from optimizing hydropower revenue to forecasting through extreme events.

Hurricane Helene anniversary and case study: Our team has been reflecting on lessons from Hurricane Helene and the tools that drive more resiliency ahead of the next storm.
Earn more revenue with better forecasts: In competitive energy markets, accurate streamflow forecasts are critical for optimizing bidding, reducing imbalance penalties. We shared data from a case study in California ISO (CAISO) that proves forecast accuracy drives more revenue.
Evaluating hydrology forecasts: Our delivers comprehensive evaluations that help clients validate performance, demonstrate ROI, and optimize the use of operational forecasts. Watch our recent webinar that shares insights on what every water professional should know about hydrology forecast evaluations.
Forecasting in a variety of conditions: We shared insights and examples from forecasting during extremes across different environements–from droughts and fires to inland flooding from hurricanes and atmospheric rivers to glacial environments and snowmelt.
