Upstream Tech has been awarded a Bureau of Reclamation contract to bring AI river forecasts to the West

In this major commercial milestone, Upstream Tech is deploying advanced AI-driven streamflow forecasting across some of the nation’s most essential river basins, dams, and reservoirs. The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), recognized as the largest water wholesaler in the U.S. and a leader in hydropower production, is using Upstream Tech’s HydroForecast modeling system as part of its commitment to integrating innovative technology into water and power operations throughout the Western U.S. This forward-looking initiative has the goal of enhancing water supply reliability and supporting efficient hydropower generation as the region faces evolving climate and resource challenges.

These efforts are part of Reclamation’s Facilitated Adoption program, which was created to help bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and on-the-ground operational change. HydroForecast demonstrated its strength as a participant in the Reclamation-co-sponsored Streamflow Forecast Rodeo prize competition, where its accuracy and AI capabilities stood out in a competitive field.

HydroForecast’s short-term probabilistic forecasts are now being deployed across key Reclamation regions across the West including: California Great Basin, Columbia Pacific Northwest, Lower Colorado, Missouri Basin & Arkansas-Rio Grande-Texas, and the Upper Colorado. The AI streamflow forecasts will be in the hands of operators to integrate into workflows and decisions.

“This collaboration represents what Upstream Tech is all about—connecting innovation with the critical decision-makers who steward our most vital resources,” said Upstream Tech CEO Marshall Moutenot. “Reclamation has been a part of HydroForecast’s evolution from early on, so we’re especially excited to work collaboratively to discover new ways to strengthen water and power management in the face of a changing climate.”
