In snow-dominated basins, forecast accuracy depends on snowpack and melt dynamics. That’s why we’ve been experimenting with training HydroForecast to predict land surface conditions like SWE and soil moisture. Early results of these tests show forecasting SWE + soil moisture strengthens streamflow forecasts and enhanced the model's internal representations of hydrologic processes. Last month, the HydroForecast team met with California water leaders in Sacramento—including DWR, State Water Resources Control Board, State Water Contractors, and CNRFC—to discuss applications from climate-adaptive forecasting to FIRO, water rights, allocations, groundwater recharge, and flood forecasting. We also met with Bureau of Reclamation and Placer County Water Agency to see how their operations teams use HydroForecast for daily planning and real-time decisions. Read about it in Alex Truby's post on LinkedIn.

November brought a series of strong atmospheric rivers (ARs) to the West Coast, and another wave of heavy AR-induced precipitation is predicted this week. We’re keeping a close eye on our forecasts in this region—some areas may see some of the highest flows in the past 5 years!
Check out a behind the scenes look into the research and development (R&D) work from the HydroForecast team in our recent blog about snow data’s impact on flow forecast performance.
