After a competitive RFP process, Upstream Tech has been selected by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to bring its AI-powered streamflow forecasting technology, HydroForecast, to OPG's hydroelectric operations.

OPG, Ontario's largest clean energy producer, generates approximately half of the province's electricity through a diverse mix of generation, including hydroelectric.

Under the agreement, Upstream Tech will partner with OPG's Water Resource Managers to train and deploy advanced AI streamflow forecasts across OPG's watersheds to support activities ranging from daily operations to long-term planning.

Highlights

  • Strong forecast performance: HydroForecast has demonstrated high forecast accuracy through independent industry benchmarking and customer results.
  • Integration with existing tools: By connecting to existing infrastructure HydroForecast is seamlessly integrated into operational workflows and decision-making.
  • Customized for Ontario: For OPG, HydroForecast will be trained and calibrated using province-specific watershed data, adapting to the unique challenges of water resource management in Ontario.

This partnership between Upstream Tech and OPG is part of a broader industry trend toward integrating advanced analytics and digital solutions in utility operations. Use of HydroForecast is intended to strengthen operational efficiency, grid reliability, and responsible water management. The initiative demonstrates how public utilities and technology providers can collaborate to address evolving challenges in the energy sector.

"We are thrilled to partner with OPG to continue to advance the field of hydrology," says Upstream Tech CEO Marshall Moutenot. "This collaboration will help bring leading edge solutions to the critically important work OPG does to help power Ontario."
