We’re excited to announce the release of the latest generation of HydroForecast Seasonal, powered by a new underlying model architecture.

The HydroForecast Seasonal streamflow model is used today as a critical tool to plan for water supply, manage medium- and long-term water risk, and optimize reservoir operations across the season. These forecasts make it easier for water managers, utilities, and hydropower operators to anticipate changing conditions and reduce uncertainty. With better foresight, they can make proactive decisions that improve reliability, reduce costs, and support business goals.

Next-gen architecture

Our team of PhD hydrologists, machine learning experts, and software engineers is always working to push the field of hydrology forward. We’ve built a new end-to-end, foundational AI hydrology architecture that connects global observations with a wide range of meteorological forecasts to produce probabilistic forecasts with flexible timesteps and horizons.

The scale of the data utilized by this approach, combined with its novel architecture leads to increased performance, and its output flexibility means it will underpin HydroForecast horizons moving forward! It’s also extremely scalable, which means getting new forecasts up and running is faster than ever.

Introducing HydroForecast Seasonal-3

Seasonal-3, the latest version of HydroForecast Seasonal, is the first forecast to utilize these advancements. In our rigorous validation across geographies and hydrological conditions, we’ve measured strong performance in all environments.

Seasonal-3 offers major improvements, including:

  • Daily timestep with a variable horizon up to 1 year out.
  • Utilization of multiple ensemble weather forecasts, in addition to satellite observations and snowpack datasets.
  • A distributed architecture that ingests data inputs at the sub-basin level to capture more localized variability and improve performance.
  • Improved performance in cold weather and region-specific guidance from training with Canadian gauges.

The new Seasonal-3 model brings advancements in accuracy and usability that will make it easier to manage risk and optimize operations with greater confidence and efficiency than ever before. Talk to our team about using Seasonal-3 for your seasonal water planning needs.
