The latest news & resources

As we move through the seasons and into 2026, water managers globally are navigating a high-stakes transition from managing intense, short-term weather extremes to forecasting the complexities of the spring thaw.

Reliable forecasts and hands-on support for high-flow events

During the recent sequence of intense atmospheric rivers across the U.S. West Coast HydroForecast provided critical decision support as our partners and customers experienced record high flows. The region experienced extensive flooding, and some models struggled to capture the rare event. By working in close collaboration with our partners—including work with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation that we recently highlighted at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2025 conference—we helped operators navigate continuous and intense bouts of precipitation  and "rain-on-snow" conditions. From flagging peak flows days in advance to providing clarity on the timing of reservoir’s filling, our AI-powered model empowered managers to make confident operational decisions during some of the season's most important and uncertain moments.

Preparing for an unpredictable snow season

It’s still early in the winter season, but the focus is already starting to shift to the 2026 snowmelt  season. This year is off to a rocky start with vastly different regional snowpack trends. While the Northern Rockies are enjoying above average snowpack, much of the U.S. is facing a “snow drought”, with precipitation falling as rain well into January in many regions.

These unpredictable weather patterns underscore the benefits from adaptable AI-driven modeling approaches that can identify and anticipate complex shifting rain-versus-snow dynamics that don’t necessarily align with historical norms. Better insight into these changing conditions helps operators manage spill risk and optimize storage, even as traditional seasonal patterns become less reliable.
