Melanie Feen and Hunter Johnson recently hosted a webinar about evaluating hydrology forecasts. They discussed the most critical evaluation criteria and how the HydroForecast team tailors their evaluations to specific use cases. We also shared a case study about the accuracy of HydroForecast Annual predictions for freshet volumes in the Pacific Northwest.
We enjoy hearing how our customers use HydroForecast in their work. Here’s a recent quote from our customers in New Zealand:
"HydroForecast is a valuable tool at Auckland Council, giving us crucial insights into upcoming storm and heavy rain events. The dashboard is an integral part of our emergency response workflows and supports our commitment to public safety. We also use it to plan our hydrology operational work, targeting data collection during high flow events at important sites."
- Kolt Johnson, Hydrology and Environmental Data Management Manager
We recently launched HydroForecast for the first of the Bureau of Reclamation sites ahead of the atmospheric river season in the Pacific Northwest. We now have operational forecasts running at 9 locations spanning 3 basins in the Columbia Pacific Northwest region, as well as at 3 locations in the California Great Basin region. Read more about our collaboration with Reclamation.

Hunter Johnson wrote about how HydroForecast can be used to manage droughts. He compared his personal experience living in California, where droughts are a normal part of life, with his recent move to New York where a rare drought is occurring. HydroForecast customers across the US are currently experiencing varying levels of drought and using HydroForecast to help them plan their water resources efficiently.
HydroForecast isn’t just for hydropower! Streamflows and surface water runoff predictions are key for environmental management within industries ranging from construction to mining. Alex Truby recently wrote about how HydroForecast is facilitating more sustainable water management practices in the mining industry.

Our product team has been hard at work making HydroForecast even more resilient and rolling out exciting updates for our customers! We’re proud to maintain 99.9% operational uptime, and to keep that standard, our forecasts need to stay rock-solid—even when data sources aren’t. While we can’t control if third-party weather forecasts are delayed, we can control how our models respond. We’ve added new safeguards to ensure that even if inputs are late, your forecasts still arrive on time—reliable as ever.
